Artist's Comments

~VenomaShockwave took a couple pictures of a beautiful sunrise in Chicago and I decided to try to paint it. This is the first time I've ever used a photo for reference. ^^

I made an attempt to get the lighting right on this one for once. If I keep this up, I might eventually be able to paint halfway decent lighting XD Also, I tried a new painting technique for the dragon. I think if I merge this style with my old one, I might have something pretty cool. How do you guys like it?

And speaking of the dragon, it seems to be pretty fail, because most of my family members couldn't tell that it was sitting on a rocky ledge with its wings folded beside it. And for more of a sense of location, the dragon is on the foothills of a mountain range, overlooking a forested landscape.

The camera messed it up. It messed up the colors, too. DX

Acrylics, on 12x16 in. canvas.

This is beautiful! The sunset looks awesome. Some details of the dragon are a bit hard to see, but i dont think it was supposed to be the focus, was it? The light shimmering off the scales give a really pretty effect. The skyline looks very natural. On the bottom right corner of the sky, the clouds looked a bit weird to me, but i dont know. The perspective is great, its like I'm sitting there next to the dragon and sharing the wonderful moment.
This picture is so pretty and i could totally see it hanging on a wall somewhere. :D

This is maybe one of the best paint artwork i ever seen.
You can see a lot of work for the details, especially on the dragon scales and on the trees.
the sky effect is so close to the realistic one, for the kind of the color and for the shadow it have.
The dragon is really good made, wit correct anatomy and an amazing care for the head position and prospective.
Also i want add that the silver paint gave at the picture the perfect idea for the light reflect.

I advice everyone to browse that artist gallery for see more marvelous artworks like that.

Using the photo as a reference sure had an effect, the whole environment really looks alive and realistic! :) Sadly, the dragon really merges with the surface due to similar colour and lighting attributes (for example you could shade the rock under his body and wings to "differ" the dragon from the rock). But altogether, having a reference proved itself useful and I think it might come out quite interesting next time as well! :D

Thank you very much! (It's a sunrise, though, not a sunset. XP )

Hi. I'm Cara. I love to draw dragons, and I think penguins are evil communists that are trying to take over the world.
